Harwich’s streets burst into colour and excitement on Saturday 25th October with the annual Harwich Guy Carnival, a tradition dating back to the late 19th century. This beloved event, rooted in the town’s rich heritage, pokes fun at topical issues in a tradition known as ‘guying’; vibrant floats, creative costumes and ‘big heads’ all paraded through the town to Harwich’s historic centre.
This year’s carnival was truly spectacular, drawing big crowds and showcasing the community’s creativity. A historic partnership marked the occasion: For the first time, a local company stepped forward as sponsor. Galloper Wind Farm powered the event, strengthening ties between local industry and cherished tradition.
Thanks to the generosity of organisers, participants, and Galloper’s support, an impressive £4,800 was raised for good causes, benefitting local charities and community groups. The funding from our sponsorship covered all the costs of organising and putting on the carnival, allowing all the funds raised to channel directly back into the community. The Harwich & Dovercourt Rotary Club President, Andy Fern expressed his thanks, “We are blown away by the total of funds reached that exceeds £4,800 and our most optimistic expectations and is undoubtedly in no small part due to our partnership with Galloper Wind Farm that has been a real boost to the Carnival and what we can do. We look forward to continuing this in future years and strengthening this unique local event.” With Steve Wilson, Communications Manager of the Harwich and Dovercourt Rotary Club adding “Our partnership with Galloper Wind Farms has had an immediate impact on improving aspects of the Guy Carnival. New banners, backdrop for photos, publicity and selfie frames are just some of the ways we have been able to refresh the carnival experience. All of this would have had to come from funds raised for good causes, so we would have been reluctant to commit this. Instead, we have seen a near record collection, all of which will go towards deserving causes, particularly alleviating poverty and supporting young people. Working with Galloper Wind Farm is not only bringing fresh ideas and possibilities for carnival, but is undoubtedly boosting our ability to fundraise and help more families in need”
The 2025 Harwich Guy Carnival not only celebrated history but continues to inspire and support the town for generations to come. Galloper is pleased to continue supporting this event for 2026 and 2027.
